Commuter is the first living environment that became a My Security Package for our members. It's only fitting that it also become the first blog entry on the website.
The most significant thing to remember as a Commuter is to be aware. It is simply too easy to end up on Auto-Pilot - and watching Commuters is actually how we came even up with the term.
We were sitting in a Walgreens parking lot the first day we introduced our organization to the general public. This particular Walgreens was on a one of the very busiest (and therefore longest at times) intersections in Cobb County, Georgia. It was rush hour - time to head home. We just sat there watching all these people drive by in their cars that were just that - on auto-pilot.
Not only were these individual unaware of their surroundings because they were zoned out on their drive, most would also remain zoned out if they had to stop for gas, groceries, dinner or other errand.
Unfortunately, Auto-Pilot can happen to virtually anyone. The routine and monotony of the commute can be stressful and after a long hard day our minds rehash everything that happened during the day - and everything we felt - and we just happen to not pay attention, until....
It's the "until..."we need to be prepared for. And we need to admit to ourselves that we're probably not going to be ACTIVELY paying attention a lot of the time. If a Commuter can do that, then she can also chose to be prepared to defend herself if she finds herself in a potentially violent situation.
For a Commuter, Anti-Victim.Org strongly recommends that you turn your keychain into a potential weapon - but not so heavy that you end up causing problems with your car's steering column.
Our primary recommendation for a Commuter's keychain are two types of products - a Key Ring Baton and a Key Case Pepper Spray.
We'll add some follow-up postings to discuss why those two types of products and how to use them - but you can also learn this at any My Security Sense presentation and discussion forum.
